This Week In Shameful History

June 29, 2005-Then Texas Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers shoved two cameramen before a pre-game warmup at Ameriquest Field against the Los Angeles Angels, knocking one of the men’s cameras to the ground. One of the cameramen attempted to continue filming Rogers, who shoved him again, this time knocking the camera to the ground and then kicking it. He had to be restrained and was sent home. Commissioner Bud Selig suspended Rogers for 20 games and fined him $50,000 two days later. Rogers ultimately only served a 13-game suspension and the fine was converted to a charitable organization. Rogers was released by the Rangers at the end of the season.

July 2, 1969-Then Cincinnati Reds P Jerry Arrigo tied a NL record by hitting 3 Atlanta Braves in a single inning of their 9-4 loss to the Braves. As a team, the Reds hit 5 batters in the game becoming the only team to do so in the 20th century. They were matched by the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 19, 2000.

July 2, 1999-Major league umpire Tom Hallion was suspended for 3 games for his actions during an argument with then Colorado Rockies C Jeff Reed and pitching coach Milt May six days earlier. The argument started when Rockies P Mike DeJean complained to 3B umpire Terry Tata about a check-swing call while walking to the dugout. Hallion told DeJean to get in the dugout. Baseball officials couldn’t recall another time that an umpire was suspended for an on-field dispute, thus making Hallion the first.

July 3, 2001-Pawtucket Red Sox OF Izzy Alcantara was hit by a pitch from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons P Blas Cedeno. Alcantara, feeling he was thrown at, infamously kicked Barons C Jeremy Salazar in the chest protector and proceeded to charge the mound. The bench-clearing brawl came on Family Night at the Pawtucket home game. Alcantara was given a 7-game suspension and was taken out of the Minor League All-Star Game played a couple weeks later.
