Shameful Moments:

-Avoided suspension by agreeing to enter a drug rehabilitation program on April 1, 1987 after testing positive for cocaine during spring training while with the Mets

-Suspended for 60 days for violating the terms of his drug aftercare program on June 28, 1994

-Admitted into the Betty Ford Center in California for substance abuse treatment on July 22, 1994

-Suspended for the entire 1995 season for violating the terms of his drug aftercare program for substance abuse on November 4, 1994 after he again tested positive for cocaine

-Arrested on February 20, 2002 in Tampa, FL for DWI, having an open container of alcohol, and driving with a suspended license (plead guilty to reckless driving and was given 1 year of probation)

-Arrested on January 5, 2003 for driving with a suspended license

-Arrested on March 12, 2005 in Tampa, FL for hitting his girlfriend after she threw a telephone at him (released 2 days later and given a misdemeanor battery charge)

-Drove away from police after being stopped on August 23, 2005 for driving erratically (the officer said Gooden showed signs of drunkenness - he turned himself in 3 days later and was given a felony charge of fleeing police and misdemeanor charges of DUI and resisting arrest without violence - received a 3-year probation sentence)

-Arrested on March 14, 2006 for violating the terms of his probation when he admitted to his probation officer that he used cocaine and proceeded to fail a drug test (chose what became 7 months of prison over an extended probation sentence in hopes that prison would separate him from his temptations)
