Recent Shameful Moments

July 13, 2008-Former Denver Broncos RB Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana again this season and could potentially be suspended for the year.  He was suspended last October by the NFL for a year after he tested positive for marijuana.  However, he won his appeal and had the suspension overturned.

July 11, 2008-Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance after police found Jones in his car with 6 grams of cocaine.  He was released on $2500 bond.  He has an arraignment set for August 11.

July 11, 2008-Former Oakland Raiders QB and current Alabama football color analyst Ken Stabler has been granted a leave of absence for the upcoming season in the wake of his DUI arrest.  He was arrested in June, making that his third arrest for drunken driving.

July 10, 2008-Former Los Angeles Rams K Tony Zendejas was arrested for drugging and raping a female customer at his San Dimas sports bar in Los Angeles in January.  Prosecutors say that Zendejas gave the woman a drink that made her groggy and she woke up in a nearby motel room, allegedly after being raped.  Zendejas faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

July 10, 2008-Sacramento Kings C Brad Miller has been suspended for 5 games by the NBA for violating the league's drug program.  The suspension will start with the first games of the 2008-09 season.

July 10, 2008-Chicago Bulls G JamesOn Curry has been suspended for 1 game by the NBA after he plead guilty to two misdemeanors in Idaho.  He was arrested back in January for urinating in public and then resisting arrest.

July 9, 2008-New England Patriots RB Kevin Faulk has plead no contest to a charge of misdemeanor marijuana possession.  He has been given a suspended 5-month sentence, 1 year of supervised probation, and 40 hours of community service.

July 8, 2008-NASCAR has penalized Dale Earnhardt Inc. 150 points for bringing an illegal car to Daytona last week.  Martin Truex's No. 1 Chevrolet failed its initial inspection because it failed to fit NASCAR's roof template.  The car has been sent to Concord for further inspection.  Truex dropped from 14th in the standings to 18th after the penalty.  Only the top 12 drivers make the Chase.  Crew chief Kevin Manion and car chief Gary Putnam have been suspended for the next 6 races and placed on probation until the end of the year.  Manion was also fined $100,000.

July 8, 2008-Former Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry faces a retrial on July 14 for an assault charge for allegedly punching an 18-year-old in the face in March.  His first trial ended in a hung jury on July 1 when jurors couldn't reach a verdict.

July 7, 2008-Seattle Seahawks LB Lofa Tatupu has plead guilty to drunken driving and sentenced to a day in jail and ordered to pay $1255 in fines.  He has also had his license suspended for 90 days and must have an ignition interlock breath alcohol device installed in his car for 1 year.

July 7, 2008-Former Minnesota Vikings DL Darrion Scott has plead guilty to child endangerment after he put a plastic bag over the head of his 2-year-old son.  The other charges against him have been dismissed as part of the guilty plea.  He will be sentenced on July 24.

July 3, 2008-Former track star Tim Montgomery has plead guilty to distribution of more than 100 grams of heroin and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute.  The plea deal avoids a trial that was set for next week.  Montgomery now faces 5 years in prison and up to a $2 million fine when he is sentenced on October 10.  He was sentenced in May to nearly 4 years in prison for his role in a check fraud scheme.

July 1, 2008-A judge has declared a mistrial in the case of former Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry for assault.  A jury in Cincinnati, OH consisting of 8 people failed to agree on a verdict.  The judge dismissed the jury and set a hearing for July 8.  Henry has been accused of punching an 18-year old man in the face.  Henry had a criminal damaging charge for breaking the man's car window with a beer bottle dismissed earlier.

July 1, 2008-The New England Patriots have released DB Willie Andrews in the wake of his second arrest this year.  Andrews was arrested for allegedly pointing a gun at his girlfriend's head early yesterday morning.

June 30, 2008-Baltimore Ravens DB Derrick Martin was charged with drug abuse after he was found to have marijuana at a Cleveland airport.  He was issued a ticket and will be sent a summons to appear in court on July 15.  He faces a maximum of a $150 fine because it is only a misdemeanor

This Week In Shameful History

July 14, 1978-Hall of Famer and then Los Angeles Dodgers P Don Sutton was ejected by umpire Doug Harvey in the 7th inning against the St. Louis Cardinals after three scuffed balls were found. Sutton was charged with a 4-1 loss.

July 14, 1994-Former Toronto Blue Jays OF Joe Carter came out for a game against the Texas Rangers with his uniform saying “Torotno”. The Blue Jays lost 7-3.

July 15, 2000-Then Boston Red Sox DH Carl Everett bumped umpire Ron Kulpa twice after being told by the umpire to stay inside the lines of the batter’s box. He damaged equipment in the dugout before going to clubhouse. He was later fined $5000 and suspended for 10 games.

July 17, 1991-Former Baltimore Orioles DH Sam Horn became the first non-pitcher and only the second man ever to strike out 6 consecutive times in a single game. The Orioles lost 9-8 in 15 innings to the Kansas City Royals.

July 17, 2001-Then Cleveland Indians P Bartolo Colon was ejected from their 10-4 win over the Houston Astros after Colon threw a pitch near the head of Houston C Scott Servais. The pitch missed his head and instead hit his bat. Colon was later suspended for 6 games because of this.

July 18, 1994-Former Cleveland Indians OF Albert Belle was suspended for 10 days for using a corked bat in a game four days earlier against the Chicago White Sox. The suspension was later reduced to 7 days with a $7000 fine after Belle dropped the appeal.

July 18, 1995-Hall of Famer and former Houston Oilers QB Warren Moon was accused by his wife, Felicia, of slapping and choking her and that he proceeded to chase her when she drove away. Felicia refused to press charges, but Moon was arrested for misdemeanor assault anyway. He went to trial in February 1996 and was acquitted.

July 19, 1986-New York Mets P Ron Darling, P Bob Ojeda, P Rick Aguilera, and IF Tim Teufel were all arrested after an early-morning brawl with off-duty police officers working security outside of a bar in Houston. All four were released before their game against the Astros later that day. Darling and Teufel were fined $200 apiece six months later and the charges against Ojeda and Aguilera were dropped.

July 19, 1990-All-time hit king Pete Rose was sentenced to 5 months in prison and fined $50,000 for pleading guilty to two felony counts of filing false income tax returns.
