This Week In Shameful History July 14, 1978-Hall of Famer and then Los Angeles Dodgers P Don Sutton was ejected by umpire Doug Harvey in the 7th inning against the St. Louis Cardinals after three scuffed balls were found. Sutton was charged with a 4-1 loss. July 14, 1994-Former Toronto Blue Jays OF Joe Carter came out for a game against the Texas Rangers with his uniform saying “Torotno”. The Blue Jays lost 7-3. July 15, 2000-Then Boston Red Sox DH Carl Everett bumped umpire Ron Kulpa twice after being told by the umpire to stay inside the lines of the batter’s box. He damaged equipment in the dugout before going to clubhouse. He was later fined $5000 and suspended for 10 games. July 17, 1991-Former Baltimore Orioles DH Sam Horn became the first non-pitcher and only the second man ever to strike out 6 consecutive times in a single game. The Orioles lost 9-8 in 15 innings to the Kansas City Royals. July 17, 2001-Then Cleveland Indians P Bartolo Colon was ejected from their 10-4 win over the Houston Astros after Colon threw a pitch near the head of Houston C Scott Servais. The pitch missed his head and instead hit his bat. Colon was later suspended for 6 games because of this. July 18, 1994-Former Cleveland Indians OF Albert Belle was suspended for 10 days for using a corked bat in a game four days earlier against the Chicago White Sox. The suspension was later reduced to 7 days with a $7000 fine after Belle dropped the appeal. July 18, 1995-Hall of Famer and former Houston Oilers QB Warren Moon was accused by his wife, Felicia, of slapping and choking her and that he proceeded to chase her when she drove away. Felicia refused to press charges, but Moon was arrested for misdemeanor assault anyway. He went to trial in February 1996 and was acquitted. July 19, 1986-New York Mets P Ron Darling, P Bob Ojeda, P Rick Aguilera, and IF Tim Teufel were all arrested after an early-morning brawl with off-duty police officers working security outside of a bar in Houston. All four were released before their game against the Astros later that day. Darling and Teufel were fined $200 apiece six months later and the charges against Ojeda and Aguilera were dropped. July 19, 1990-All-time hit king Pete Rose was sentenced to 5 months in prison and fined $50,000 for pleading guilty to two felony counts of filing false income tax returns.
