Shameful or Not?

May 1, 2007

The Miami Dolphins may or may not have made the arguable “dumbest” pick in the draft. With the 9th pick overall, they chose Ohio State wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. The consensus was that the Dolphins should have chosen Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. This is probably an accurate statement (at least for now).

The Dolphins have already released serviceable QB Joey Harrington (signed with the Atlanta Falcons) and current starter Daunte Culpepper played in only four games last year due to a knee injury. Current backup Cleo Lemon hasn’t shown much yet although he did play a decent game in the ‘06 season finale in a 27-22 loss to Indianapolis. Other than that, he hasn’t done much.

There is talk of the Dolphins trading with the Kansas City Chiefs for Trent Green and most likely releasing Culpepper. Nothing has happened yet, though. Green has had some injury problems as we all know including missing 8 games and part of another this past season with a head injury. This may not be that much of an improvement over Culpepper.

Ginn probably will be a decent no. 2 or 3 receiver and return man, but wide receiver probably wasn’t as big of a concern as quarterback. If the Dolphins do get Green and he stays healthy, hopefully all will go well. However, with Quinn, under the guidance of Green or Culpepper, could develop into an exceptional player. Instead Quinn went 22nd overall to the Cleveland Browns. He most likely will get put under center too early because current starter Charlie Frye can’t cut it and Quinn will crash and burn for a couple seasons.

We’ll go back in three or four years and reexamine this draft decision by the Dolphins. Hopefully the Dolphins brass know something that everyone else doesn’t, but at the moment it doesn’t look too good.  Will this turn out to be a good draft choice by the Dolphins?  Give use your comments.  E-mail us at shamefulornot@athletehos.com
