Shameful or Not?

New York Jets season ticket holder Carl Mayer has filed a class-action lawsuit against the New England Patriots and coach Bill Belichick for what was called “deceiving customers” because of the scandal surrounding the Patriots for video taping Jets defensive coaches give signals to their players. The suit is asking for more than $184 million in damages to be given to Jets ticket holders.
The suit says that Jets ticket holders should be compensated for all 8 games played between the Jets and Patriots in Giants Stadium since Belichick became coach of the Patriots in 2000. Mayer and his attorney came up with the figure of $61.6 million roughly that customers paid to watch the games and that they’re entitled to triple the amount to $184 million because of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act and the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act.
Mayer, a lawyer, is being represented by Bruce Afran in the suit. The pair have been involved in trying to take down prominent public figures through court. Most of their causes have been unsuccessful including trying to get a special election to replace former New Jersey Governor James McGreevey in 2004.
The figure seems a little high to be suing for. Fans that attended the games surely got some enjoyment out of them as they probably didn’t suspect the Patriots of cheating in them. For that matter, we don’t even know for sure if they were cheating during those games. If the fans are entitled to get a refund, tripling the amount of the ticket is hard to swallow.
Any refund is probably not likely. This sounds a lot like a chance to show hatred for the rival Patriots as well as for the two lawyers to get into the headlines again trying to take down a popular figure.
